Spa Highlights
The small village of Bazna (Baassen in German), located just outside the medieval town of Medias, was first settled in 1302.
The health spa resort, established in 1842, features a unique combination of therapeutic mud and mineral waters which produce excellent results in the treatment of rheumatic and nervous system afflictions.
Another curative element is the Bazna salt, rich in iodine and bromine.

During the Middle Ages, Medias, like most other towns in Transylvania, was strongly fortified. Its 33 craft guilds built, maintained and defended the bastions of the walled city against invading forces. The fortified church of St. Margaret represented the core around which the citadel gradually developed. The center of the ancient settlement of Medias has maintained a medieval feel with narrow winding lanes, centuries-old houses and a large pedestrian square surrounded by colorful facades
The Fortified Church at Valea Viilor

Located in the Vineyards Valley, this fortified church was built in 1263 in gothic style and was enlarged and fortified in the 15th and 16th centuries by adding a range of 26-feet-tall and five-feet- wide walls. Inside, you can admire Saxon furniture dating from the 16th century.

The Tarnave vineyard in Transylvania is one of Romania's major white wine producers. With its cool climate and slopes that stretch from the Tarnava Mare (Large Tarnava) to the Tarnava Mica (Small Tarnava) rivers, the region is ideal for fruity white grapes with a very good acidity. The area has a long tradition of producing excellent dry and medium-dry wines such as Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Traminer.
Although wooden tools have been replaced by modern winepresses and state of the art technology, grape picking, the control of fermentation, clarity, stability, the storage and maturation of wine are all carried out according to a special set of rules handed down from generation to generation. There are also traditions of wine making in some of the Saxon villages in this region, with small vineyards producing must (new wine) for the larger wineries.

Wine and champagne tasting is offered at the 16th century Bethlen Castle in Cetatea de Balta, located between Tarnaveni and Blaj.

In the nearby countryside, 13th century Biertan, a UNESCO World Heritage town, stands high on a hill, enclosed by walls more than 35 feet high. The most famous of the fortified churches, Biertan was the seat of the Lutheran bishops from 1527 to 1867.

Transylvania is also home to the exquisite medieval town of Sighisoara (find out more about Sighisoara), a perfectly intact 15th century gem with nine towers, narrow passageways and cobbled streets, burgher houses and ornate churches. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sighisoara is also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, nicknamed Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes), ruler of Walachia from 1456 to 1462. It was Vlad who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional creation, Count Dracula. His house is just one of many attractions here. Others include: the Church on the Hill, with its 500-year-old frescoes; the Church of the Dominican Monastery, known for its Transylvanian Renaissance carved altarpiece, baroque painted pulpit, Oriental carpets and 17th century organ; and the Venetian House, built in the 13th century. In the nearby countryside, another UNESCO World Heritage town, 13th century Biertan (more information: castles-fortresses.html#biertan), stands high on a hill as one of the largest and most impressive medieval strongholds in Transylvania.

Saschiz is renowned not only as home to one of Transylvania's finest fortified churches but also as a carpentry and wood-painting center. It was here that Saschiz blue pottery was born in 1702.
The Evangelical Church of Saschiz was built between 1493 and 1496 by Saxon colonists. The monument is very impressive due to its sheer size and the way the fortifying elements have been adapted to the shape of a church building. From the outside, the church appears to be a bulwark, but its defensive role is surpassed by the beauty of its gothic elements: huge arches, massive buttresses and decorative stone and brick aspects. Due to the significant distance between the center of the village and the hill on which a Saxon fortress was built in 1496, the fortified Evangelical church became the main refuge for the inhabitants of Saschiz during invading raids.
